CV and Qualifications

Martin Common was born in Inverness, Scotland in January 1944. He grew up in Fiji, went to school in England and Scotland, University in Glasgow and joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot in 1964. He served in a wide range of appointments worldwide, including two periods of service with the Bundeswehr on exchange, and two periods as a liaison officer to the former Soviet Forces in the former DDR. Graduating from the German Armed Forces Staff College, Hamburg, he served in NATO and National appointments training and managing large numbers of international staff in Germany, UK and Norway. He also qualified as a UK Treasury Management Consultant responsible for 90,000 men and women.

He is a flying instructor who has run an RAF flying training squadron in UK, and was a senior sailing instructor who ran an RYA Recognised Training Establishment in Norway. Since leaving the RAF in 2002, he has qualified as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language and works freelance in Germany as an English Language Trainer and Coach with Speex. A Yachtmaster Offshore, he holds a Commercial Endorsement, and sails twice a year from Norway on self-built Hunter Pilot 27.

Married to Petra von Wallenberg Pachaly, he lives in Simbach bei Landau in Lower Bavaria. His hobbies include telemark skiing, gardening, cabinet making, step-aerobics and shooting when feeling active and philosophy, psychology, comparative linguistics and history when feeling contemplative. His essential philosophy is that life is to be enjoyed to the full and will help you to do so as well!
